After an exhausting research (which involved watching about 10 movies) I have put together a list of medical school films that are high key relatable. These are movies that not only have a doctor or a medical student as the main character , but also have a plot relevant to hospitals and medical schools, unlike most other top lists about doctor movies that you find online.
This is a brilliant medical film, which is clearly underrated. A very high quality, high budget and amazing film that show the history of doctors. Makes us realize how far medicine has progressed from the medieval times and how the predecessors in the medical field fought to get us to where we are now. The plot take place in 11th century England where surgeon also caller barbers, and physicians were two entirely different professions. This is a film that will fire up your ambitions in your medical journey.
A comedy/ drama about medical school starring Robert De Niro, who plays the main character Patch Adams. Despite being a comedic character, he has a very interesting take on what a doctor’s role should be. Many think it is to save lives, but Patch Adams says otherwise. Patch Adams is also one that enters the medical school later in his life. It shows how he navigates the unique challenges being faced as the oldest person in his class.
A film based on the real life story of Dr. Bennet Omalu. Although this film doesn’t give as much action as you expect from a typical Will Smith film, you get to see a completely different performance by Will Smith. You get to see him portraying a personality that is a polar opposite of what you normally see of him in other Hollywood movies. The film is about how Dr. Omalu goes against the entire National Football League in order to expose the truth about health issues that are caused by football-related head traumas.
Even though, this is a film from the year 1954 this epic portrayal of medical school life is surprisingly still relevant today. Shows how little the medical curriculum has progressed within the past century. This old British comedy is ideal for someone who is starting out in medial college, to know what to expect, and for senior medical students to think back and relate to their experiences.
A film for all of you Harry Potter fans, Starring Severus Snape. This is a film based on the true story of Vivien Thomas and Alfred Blalock. The plot revolves around the duo’s attempts in curing the blue baby syndrome (Tetralogy of Fallot). Additionally, it portrays their difficult relationship with each other. Furthermore, the movie also shows the difficulties Vivien Thomas had to face as a black man in the 1940s. Specifically, he was among the only black men working in the university.
These are the ones that fit the criteria the best, from what I’ve found. If you have any other suggestions. Make sure to mention them down in the comment section!
